Also, side characters add a bit of light-hearted humor in a way that isn't annoying and does not detract from the overall ominous intrigue of the main plot. Also, for anyone who liked one for the extremely suggestive, yet understated sexuality in one, you will definitely get the same in the other. Similarly, if you have a problem with suggestions of consensual incest in a weird, roundabout manner of speaking , Vampire Knight and it's sequel may also not be for you. Another great thing about these animes is that both can stand alone in their first seasons, but if you want more, then there is a wonderful second season which lets you explore each world even further.
The stories arent similar in the least bit but the dark style and the type of animation is. Kuroshitsuji, or Black Butler, is has that 'supernatural' aspect similar to Vampire Knight, referred to as VK from now on. Black Butler BB is about a demon butler whos contracted with a 13 year old boy who has inherited his familys mansion and toy company.
The contract was that the Butler, Sebastian, was to help the boy, Ciel, find and kill whoever killed his parents and after Sebastian held his part of the deal up he would get to devour Ciel's soul. I usually dont enjoy dark animes or any stories for that matter but i thoroughly enjoyed both VK and VD. Many people have the same character in particular is very similar to the relationship hagixsaja- sebastianxciel. Same masterxservant relationship is implied. In Blood Plus, there's a queen and her knight who protects her with his life.
Both are dark themed and historical. I recommend Blood Plus to anyone who likes Black Butler because both shows are very dark. There is a similar relationship between main characters in both shows: master and servant. Also, there is a supernatural element to both shows. Death Parade add permalink. Both series have a similar color palate, and theme of judement of life and death, and are Psychological theories on humans. Both are intriguing mysteries with characters we don't know too much about, Death Parade does it episodically, Kuroshitsuji does it through the whole series.
Black Butler and Death Parade share a few things. They heavily focus on supernatural beings, Death Parade just focuses a little more on what happens to normal humans after death.
Decim is similar to a grim reaper, however has a similar personality to Sebastian. Its definitely not as light hearted as Black Butler I cried a few times personally. At certain points when Black Butler gets darker, they share a more similar vibes. They also play darts that I bet Ciel might enjoy! Fullmetal Alchemist add permalink. I'm surprised nobody has recommended Kuroshitsuji yet as an alternate anime to FMA.
The main character is a short teenaged boy with abnormal body parts is called a dog by the public in FMA, 'dog of the military', in Kuroshitsuji, 'Queen's guard dog'. He's followed around by someone who is not your average human, and together they solve mysteries about their country.
Both of them have great comedy and endings that don't stick to the manga. Both main characters have a quest that they want to achieve by any means necasare. Both have lost something that made them to to venture into that mission. Both use supranatural to achieve their purpose.
Karneval TV add permalink. In both series, there's a fantasy like feeling with a more sophisticated style of its artwork. The main male protagonist is a young boy; although they have very different personalities. However, it focuses on his relationship with others as well as the people he meets along the well.
Both series also gives off a gothic like feeling with its artwork and also a small sense of mystery. Black Butler is considerably more episodic and most likely the more dark of the two, but Karneval is not far behind and is surprising in a few different episodes. Both are punctuated by similar sorts of comedy and include the occasional hilariously dorky character. Both have similar character designs and gothic art styles. Both feature primarily male casts with debatably BL though never over-the-top undertones.
Overall, if you liked Black Butler, you are likely to enjoy the darker plot aspects and animation style of Karneval. Both have the main character trying to find out some information about people they care about.
Both have similar art, and bishies. They have the same atmosphere, which is serious but with random comedy thrown in. Le Chevalier D'Eon add permalink. Both take place in Europe in much older times and the main characters are both people who serve directly under the ruler of their country. Both also contain fantasy and mystery elements.
Period pieces highlighting the struggles of nobility. D'Eon is a knight for France and Ciel is a guard dog for England and they're both rather reticent and morose at times. Though Le Chevalier is set nearly a century before Kuroshitsuji, both make attempts to include current events of the time-- making for very interesting historical fiction. Although Le Chevalier is a bit more humorless, both are tragedies at the heart of them, as both character try to discover the mystery behind their love ones' deaths only to embark on a journey that could potentially destroy themselves and everything they know.
This is not to say they are totally without laughs, actually crossdressing is another similar theme the two have between them. Both seem to have this older time setting to them. Each deals with a magical sort of element to it as well.
Oddly, both have cross-dressing as well. Rozen Maiden add permalink. Both have the same old fashioned lolita, renaissance, elegant, etc.
Oh haha I'm so gonna get flamed for rec'ing this, but when you think about it: Victorian Dolls. Victorian Battle Butlers. And then there are awesome eyepatches Same kind of servant master relationships, similar themes. Psycho-Pass add permalink. Read recommendations by 1 more user. Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai add permalink. Both are somewhat similar in that they both deal with demons and contracts. Kuroshitsuji is much darker than Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai but they do both have their share of comedic moments.
Both protagonists are bound together with demonic being through some kind of contract. Both series are funny. Although The World God Only Knows has a more satirical and exaggerated kind of comedy while Kuroshitsuji focuses more on dark comedy. Note: WGOK focuses more on comedy. Kuroshitsuji has a little bit of everything such as drama, action, shonen ai, etc Ansatsu Kyoushitsu add permalink. It will be a hard time killing either Korosensei or Sebastian.
Comedy also plays a huge part in both shows, although the humor in Black Butler is much darker. Both series also have huge casts. Both of these anime series have Supernatural power and they are using their supernatural power to do some comedy. Owari no Seraph add permalink. I am a kuroshitsuji fan and i also love to watch seraph of the end or owari no seraph.
I highly recommend everybody to watch seraph of the end because it is an amazing anime and i think if you like this anime then you like the other one. Reasons i say so: Both animes have something to do with demons Both animes are dark Both main anime characters want to revenge their family death Both anime characters are cute cool and hot Both anime are amazing Shounen Fighting Historical Mysterious Tragic Sad Little bit of comedy. If even after Owari in the Seraph, you are still interested in vampires it is strongly recommended to take a look at Kuroshitsuji.
Hayate no Gotoku! Hayate no Gotoku is pretty similar, instead of a 12 year-old boy the butler in Hayate protects and serves a 13 year-old girl. Kamisama Hajimemashita add permalink. Both of them have a MC that has a familiar , expert in everything.
For example: - We can see a master-servant thing in both series; - Both of the anime have demons; - Sebastian from 'Kuroshitsuji' and Tomoe have a similar character - they try to hide their actual feelings; As I said before, these two anime are different - "Kuroshitsuji" is more horror, with no romance or maybe little shonen-ai elements, i'd say, but only a few of them , "Kamisama Hajimemashita" is more comedy.
I watched "Kamisama Hajimemashita" after "Kuroshitsuji", and I'm a big fan of both of them. Noblesse: Awakening add permalink. Made you fall in love with him, right "Yes, Master.
You are welcome to catch a glimpse of the exceptional life of the noble Rai, who is the creature that is above all others. Both anime have a very similar feeling and character design. Both anime take inspiration from gothic horror and focus on characters with supernatural abilities, such as demons and vampires. Both have a master-servant relationship between the main characters and overall similar action scenes. It might distinct in storywise but Sebastian is Kiritsugu. That wish in the both of the anime must be considered very well before making the contract.
Zombie-Loan add permalink. Firstly, both were produced by Square Enix. Both have eye-patches, Shinigami, contracts, death, and a dark mood. That said, Zombie Loan is way better.
While the characters and plot are very different, they both have nice humor and lots of action, and if you like one you'll most likely like the other one as well. Kuroshitsuji is the better one of the two though.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood add permalink. The setting and scenery of the anime is almost the same. Circles of Alchemy and Sebastian's symbol seal were probably very much interconnected. The feeling of both anime are pretty much similar. Experimental and such.
In Kuroshitsuji, there were indians but in FMA, there were ishbalans. Yao Ling is the 12th prince from his country but Soma is the 27th prince from his country. Ciel Phantomhive and Edward Elric are dogs of the military, dog of the queen etc.
There are only two main characters in the anime. Although both do share these incredibly dark moments. The main comparison is just that despite FMAB's darkness, it still includes comedy, whereas Kuroshitsuji is mainly just dark.
Both have excellent music, and screenplay. Ginyuu Mokushiroku Meine Liebe add permalink. There are darker plots and heavier themes which often revolve around political corruption.
The art styles, choice of color palate, aesthetic, and clothing worn are very similar. There is also that very subtle hint of romanticism between the characters as so common amongst older animes. Steins;Gate add permalink. Both Kuroshitsuji and Steins;Gate have there serious points and their not so serious points and have a bit of violence with something to do with a period in time Kuroshitsuji taking in place in the past and Steins;Gate getting involved with both past and future.
The stories of Kuroshitsuji and Steins; Gate have nothing in common, but the way there stories are executed are similar. They are both on the darker side and have unique and interesting characters also the plots of both of the stories are intriguing and keep you wanting to know more. Both stories deal with the supernatural and both are much more than what you originally expect. They have well develped characters, comedy and still manage to tell a deep story.
Great music and art. Even though Kuroshitsuji focuses on a devil butler and immortality for Baccano, both anime has similar 'air' of darkness and at the same time they are able to include comedic scenes. They also has the same time frame. Their animation and drawings are very good too. Hatenkou Yuugi add permalink.
The art quality and the air of mystery are very similar in both. Both have humor and a dark past. The story also is similar with both solving crimes and awesome action scenes. Furthermore, they both do not have parents that they're close to,resulting in their personalities are quite a bit cold although Rahzel is very cheery with Alzeid and they both are clever like dangan romps smart goddam.
Vanitas no Karte add permalink. The humor is similar in both anime as well. Similar setting and main character interactions, more of a partner relationship in Vanitas thank a parent and child relationship in Black butler but the chemistry between the two is as good as Black butler Very heavy steampunk settings but it is in London for black butler.
Mayo Chiki! Both comedies about a relationship between master and butler, where butler is always trying to protect his master. While Mayo Chiki is more romantic, Kuroshitsuji has more action. Mayo Chiki is basically a gender-swapped Black Butler made in the ecchi-harem genre, and Black Butler is what you would expect Mayo-Chiki to be if it wasn't so focused on the ecchi.
That said, Black Butler is much darker between the comedy. Also, to conform with the apparent standard, both have a butler in a suit serving someone with weird eyes! Bungou Stray Dogs add permalink.
Both of the main characters are solving crime cases and makes many mentions to the real world issues. Music is very pleasing in both of the animes- not only openings and endings but the background music as well. If you are a person of culture, books, plot twists ; then this is the anime for you!
In Kuroshitsuji season 1, plot does not fully explain main character's background, so does Bungou stray dogs. The structure is quite similar, but both of them are very unique in their own ways! Detectives, comedy, mystery, complicated characters and relationships, are in both of these animes.
If you really love Kuroshitsuji and want to see something similar but also a bit more mature, this is really it. Bungou Stray Dogs is the perfect anime for Black Butler fans because they have enough similarities to be loved by the same people but enough uniqueness to be their own animes with their own incredible identities. Natsume Yuujinchou add permalink. At first it doesn't seem similiar at all. But there is some things that connect these series and I probably only noticed because I watched them one after another I watched Natsume immediately after Kuroshitsuji.
Both have a contract with a demon who promises to eat them after all is done or in Natsume's case when there is an opening. In both cases the main lead is about the only one who knows about it.
Furthermore the male leads seem similiar in personality, appearing adult, serious and short-tempered. Well, honestly stories are a lot differents, but yeah, there are some little things that made those 2 so different series becoming 'similar'. Both main characters have a "contract" with a demon that will gonna 'eat' them whenever the contract will be done.
They really are mature guys and take hard decisions sometimes, like adults do. About their main stories, well a shared thing is that both series have a 'paranormal' side. Well, anyway, don't hope to find in Kuroshitsuji a similar anime to Natsume or viceversa 'cuz, i repeat: stories are really differents. Gatchaman Crowds add permalink. Like seriously. They're both flamboyantly villainous fem transgender red heads with other worldly powers. I'm really surprised this correlation hasn't been made before.
Hoozuki no Reitetsu add permalink. Both leave you questioning "Is there anything this tall handsome demon can't do? Both also have a Chinese character voiced by Koji Yusa. They give off the same vibe, it's hard to explain but there's a new story episode, both have young teenagers taking a responsibility due to hardships through their childhood. If you like one you'll probably like the other. Shinigami, gothic theme, western europe 's influences ,protagonists have very powerful eyes and their bitter pasts forced to be slaves are common properties these both anime shared.
Princess Principal add permalink. Another year, another anime about people in Victorian London Princess Principal adding steampunk to the mix and Black Butler adding supernatural mysteries. Ookami to Koushinryou add permalink. Both are set in the past and revolve around a human and an immortal being. Also both include a lot of talking about food. The soundtracks for both anime are similar. Suteki Tantei Labyrinth add permalink. Suteki Tantei Labyrinth is like a cuter version of Kuroshitsuji.
Both involve a young boy with special powers and his butler s. The style in clothing and character design is similar in some point and both main characters solve detective cases. Ao no Exorcist add permalink. Maybe people wont find this similar, but i think they have their similarities. Both are shonen, and im so used to them that i liked them both. They have this demon thing in their main characteres, that make them have to hide their really personallity from others outside the world.
And these animes have strong and lovely secondary characters like Mephisto o Shura in Ao no Exorcist and Grell and Undertaker in Kuroshitsuji. Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace add permalink. Gakuen Alice add permalink. Ciel is so much similar to Natsume. Cold, Distant, Emotionless, yet soon you see what lies behind those cold eyes.
Revealing to you a wounded soul that needs much love, and that is where you find Gakuen Alice. The anime that will light your world, bringing you out of that depressive state of only knowing how to kill, how to hurt, how to destroy.
The two anime's are very similar in so many ways, except for the killing, it doesn't brutally show you up close the 'bloody marks'. Both anime share similar Faustian motifs, featuring characters who sell their soul in order to get special powers. Both have incredibly stylish action, combined with darker themes of tragedy and psychological thriller, with a grim and eerie atmosphere hiding behind a facade of comedy and cheerfulness.
Both anime also feature modern takes on classic folklore and mythological creatures, such as demons, grim reapers, and witches. Chaos Dragon: Sekiryuu Seneki add permalink. Shigofumi add permalink.
Both series contain theme of supernatural dealing. The story is not like kuroshitsuji, but the atmosphere is a bit like. They both have dark, sad atmoshere. In Shigofumi then people died he become shigofumi, in kuroshitsuji then people kill himself he become shinigami, and nothing remember. Diabolik Lovers add permalink. Both are shows with Gothic and Victorian influences.
Each show has a predominately male cast and the shows are marketed towards young women. Both shows contain dark mystery plot lines with supernatural elements. While Black Butler uses demons as their creature of choice, Diabolik Lovers uses vampires.
Diabolik Lovers leans towards the sexual side while Black Butler is much more violent and gorey. Violet Evergarden add permalink. The overall vibe is really similar to Violet Evergarden! Bartender add permalink. Mahoutsukai no Yome add permalink. Both delve into the supernatural aspects of London, England. Sebastian and Elias seem to be very similar characters as neither is human and nor do either understand human emotions.
They both try to help their human companions throughout their journeys to accomplish their goals. Noragami add permalink. Hunter x Hunter add permalink. Shinigami Bocchan to Kuro Maid add permalink. Young duke who lives alone with his staff Shinigamies Curses Supernatural. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei add permalink. Bit of a long shot but Sebastian is the only anime character I can think of that can be compared to Kafuka. Nice and likeable while hiding very dark, twisted and demonic presence.
Often they both pop up out of nowhere and turn situations upside down with little effort. Super Lovers add permalink. The teenage protagonist Ren looks eerily similar to Ciel, while Haru is absolutely eye candy, just like Sebastian.
There is also a power struggle between the two, just like there is between Ciel and Sebastian even though his contract states he has to obey his master, no matter what.
Just take my word for it and watch Super Lovers. Yuukoku no Moriarty 2nd Season add permalink. Yakusoku no Neverland add permalink. This will scratch that unsettling, mystery itch Neverland gives you. Its one hell of a ride as Ciel uncovers monsters and mysteries with his evil, demonic Butler. You won't be physically scared, but the ideas and world presented are spine-chilling. Hataraku Maou-sama! They have powers too, But they may be bad sometimes.
Chocolat no Mahou add permalink. Contract with demons and an air of mystery with a flair of Gothic lolita fashion. Now Chocolat no Mahou has short episodes that dont always do the manga justice because there's not enough time to cram in every story detail or character development but I think it's still a nice anime and if you want something short to watch inbetween things that's a little like Kuroshitsuji then I totally recommend it.
Tokyo Ghoul add permalink. The animes grab you each with a backstory that develops the plot as a whole. Luckly each anime has a comic relief for the intensity of the action grabs you. Honestly I watched them both with in a week because once I watched two episodes I was hooked. Although they are hardly related each has a character viewed above all else and is in need of being protected. We all have someone we want to protect in our lives and that is why these animes grabbed me so much.
Tegamibachi Reverse add permalink. Strong children as main characters, both with magical eyes and a gloomy atmosphere around. Ghost Hunt add permalink. Both shows revolve around a team of people solving cases that have to do with the supernatural. Although Kuroshitsuji includes demons, shinigamis and similar creatures, Ghost Hunt revolves more-so around spirits and hauntings.

The only way to release them is for the Akuma to be exorcized. Allen Walker is on his way to the Black Order to become an Exorcist and help fight the devilish Earl and free those trapped as Akuma.
A story that has a lot of dark elements and seems to take place in a time period similar to that in Black Butler , D. Gray-Man is an excellent show you should add to your watchlist.
Szilard and Ennis are looking for something very specific; the elixir of immortality. In 's Chicago, you'd think this an impossible mission, but the two have a plan. With a variety of separate stories, such as the alchemists finding out the price of immortality and the various mafias with their wars, Szilard and Ennis may just be able to find exactly what they're looking for despite danger.
It's a perfect follow-up that still maintains that dark feeling Black Butler has. Jun Sakurada suffers from severe social anxiety, refusing to leave his house for anything. Since he's not attending school, he's taken up quite an interesting hobby with ordering toys online and sending them back; after all, once you've played with them for a while, you're bound to grow bored right?
One day, a mysterious box appears at his door - one he vaguely remembers ordering. Opening it reveals a beautiful doll that almost seems alive. Each series has a lot of mystery stirring about in it and you could say that thematically both struggle to establish the meaning of being human and separating good from evil.
Spring 12 Episodes. His brother — his sole defender — was brutally murdered. On his first day at a new school he gets approached by a stranger called Agatsuma Soubi, who claims to have known his late brother.
Ritsuka finds out that Agatsuma and his brother used to be a fighting pair, and that Agatsuma has inherited Ritsuga now that his brother is gone. Okay, first of all, Loveless is a shounen-ai title, so if you are not into those kind of themes, then just pass this one. Kuroshitsuji may not be shounen-ai, but the relationship of Ciel and Sebastian will remind you of Ritsuka and Soubi. Though the plot and storyline are completely different, the main characters seem to have similarities.
Ciel and Ritsuka have the same age, are stubborn, tough, determined as they have lost their families and seek out answers or revenge. Soubi and Sebastian are similar as well: they are calm, composed, loyal, obedient, and overly powerful.
The only difference is that Sebastian is a butler and seems to have a darker personality than Soubi. Both stories focus on a strong bond which ties the two main characters together due to the traumatic past of the young ones and while Loveless tries to showcase an ambiguous take on what it means to be loved, it tends to portray the true nature of humanity which is portrayed in Kuroshitsuji as well.
It has been many years since Kuroshitsuji first aired but it still holds a special place in my heart. So if you share the same feelings as I do, you will certainly enjoy all the titles in this list. If you have anything else to recommend, feel free to include it in your comments. Article Comment.
