From a personal point of view, I think it readdressed the balance and had a great nurturing effect on the production. We were all happy to jump in and make the tea. Their characters are completely different — slightly bossy, a bit chaotic, extremely practical, and very high maintenance! Suddenly it was time to give up my day job as a television and film producer and prepare for the white-knuckle ride of making the dream a reality: money to raise, a theatre to find, artwork to create, ticket agents to seduce, deadlines to meet.
The suggested opening dates were April 6th or April 9th. It seemed a good omen. It was a tense time, as their emotional backing as well as their creative input was very important to me. By now we had a date for opening but we had no theatre. But its sheer size meant that the scale of the production had to expand dramatically too, with cast, crew, set and budget all having to be reworked. A lot of fingers were crossed for the big night. And so We still joke about it. Mamma Mia! The show had its premiere in London in and has since been adapted and played in over 50 countries.
The production team behind the film stayed as true to that as possible and traveled to Greece to film many outdoor scenes, though most of the film was shot at Pinewood Studios in the U. To give it the desired look and for it to look realistic, of course , real trees were used for the set and taken care of so they could keep growing. Here We Go Again did. Here are all the locations in Greece where Mamma Mia! Kalokairi got its looks from the Skopelos island, located in the western Aegean Sea.
Skopelos was the main location for the film, as many outdoor scenes were filmed on different parts of the island, especially at the beaches. Mamma Mia! Only a couple of years after the London opening, Mamma Mia! Relishing the challenge Nevertheless, it took until April — after much press speculation if and when there would ever be a movie version — before it was finally announced that the musical would indeed be filmed for the big screen.
The production company responsible for bringing Mamma Mia! Johnson certainly never thought twice about grabbing this opportunity to transfer her story to the screen. In January it was announced that none other than Meryl Streep — one of the most famous and well-respected American actresses of the past three decades — had signed on to play the lead role of Donna. Well before the movie version Streep had made it clear that she was a fan of the musical, sending her compliments to the cast after seeing a Broadway performance.
Naturally, the production team took note. I AM Mamma Mia! With Streep on board, there were no problems in attracting a stellar cast for all the main characters.
Original musicians With the shooting of the film scheduled to commence in the summer of , all the music had to be pre-recorded well in advance. Along the way there had been a few changes in the manuscript, which meant that some songs were no longer a part of the musical, while others had been added.
This process was, of course, mainly the work of screen writer Catherine Johnson.
